“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." ~Matthew 5:13-16

Behavior Vs. Academics

Tomorrow is Parent Teacher Conference day in our family.  I am always a wee bit nervous about this event.  I think more than the academic side of things (because I can see what kind of work they are bringing home), I get anxious about what their teacher's are going to say to me about their behavior.  I find it interesting though, unless I ask, they don't usually offer that information.  Of course, I want my kids to be successful academically, but the most important thing to me is their character.  They can proceed through their academic career with a 4.0, but if I've failed to teach them the truth of God's Word, then they will enter the world with very little hope and forgetting the One they can cling to.  I have yet to find one verse in the Bible that addresses the need for parents to make sure they are teaching algebra to their student with clarity (thankfully, otherwise I would be deemed a failure as a parent), but what I do see is God commanding parents to speak truth into the hearts of their children.  Because our children are in the public school system and they aren't receiving Godly instruction from their teachers, we MUST talk to them, all the time, about what they are seeing and hearing in the world and preparing them with God's truth to combat life's hurdles and battles.  Take comfort and be encouraged by the following verses.  I thought I should make the list shorter, but I couldn't cut any one verse... they each are so impactful and helpful!

And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
- Exodus 18:20

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
- Deuteronomy 6:5-7

Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
- Psalms 25:5

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
- Proverbs 9:9

And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.
- Ezekiel 44:23

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
- 2 Timothy 3:16
